Shock usually means a very sudden acceleration or deceleration or "hit" of some kind, usually used in a "jarring" sense or related to abruptness of motion or action. We have: shock wave (propagating disturbance that is moving faster than the speed of sound in a medium), shocking a pool (rapid and large increase of chlorine), cold shock (like the polar bear challenge), electric shock (current passing through the body), and shell shock (a type of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder).
Psychological shock is generated by a series of events (usually defined as terrifying) causing an acute stress reaction, that builds up over time since the events are occurring faster than the person can recover from them. This is what can lead someone to their tipping point. Mental breakdown, neuroses, psychoses, "going postal". It's not inexcusable but it is understandable - it can be studied and addressed. Mental health, emotional health, social health, spiritual health: can be exercised and built-up in a positive way.
Shock Absorber (damper): is a device, usually mechanical or hydraulic, used to absorb (and damp) shock impulses by converting kinetic energy into heat or some other means of dissipating the energy. In psychological shock, we need to effectively channel, dampen, and dissipate the "shock energy" coming in from these series of events. We need to actively and consciously calm ourselves, to be aware of these additive events, then take action:
Practice calming and patience techniques: prayer, meditation, physical exercise or yoga, rocking out (crank up the radio in your car), etc. You might call this "detoxing".
Visualize the future "seeing the light at the end of the tunnel".
Plan (research, hypothesize, test).
Act (put your plan into motion).
This may not always end in complete success, but the "act of acting" can be its own reward, and can help us grow in patience and social cohesiveness. Good luck, you are in my prayers. :-)

Dear All,
I had a stroke on 11/5 and spent a week in the hospital. I am doing well, but will need surgery in the coming weeks; please continue to pray for me.
Thanks,
-John.
We're going to a local zoo tomorrow - haven't been there in a LONG time. I'm looking forward to it, I find it peaceful. If you have a nearby zoo, consider visiting it soon if you haven't been there in a while. :-)

The epic tale of "The Boy Who Cried Wolf" has a moral to the story: at the end, after crying "wolf!" falsely and laughing at the woodsmen who comes to "save him", the wolf really does appear and now the woodsmen don't respond to his cries for help. We are seeing that in today's society: these hyperventilating, mouth-frothing, extremists have been screaming that it's "the end of democracy" or "everyone's a racist, bigot, -phobe, (insert whatever here)", or "the climate is going to implode in 12 years" are in for a rude awakening. The wolf is November 8th.
